Last Energy Enters Development Of National Significance Planning In Wales

Planning And Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) Accepts Designation Of National Significance (DNS) Application Notification‍Company To Begin Statutory Planning Activities

Bridgend, South Wales— Last Energy, a full-service developer of 20 MWe micro modular nuclear power plants, announced today that Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) has admitted the company into the Development of National Significance (DNS) process and that it will submit a formal planning application for its Llynfi Clean Energy Project.

On Wednesday, PEDW confirmed that Last Energy’s planning notice fulfilled the requisite criteria to be considered as a DNS application. Acceptance of a DNS notice is an important regulatory initial step that allows Last Energy to pursue a Development of National Significance designation.

After extensive consultation with local communities and authorities, approval of DNS projects is determined by Welsh Ministers, with an assessment and recommendation from PEDW.

Having received official notice of acceptance from PEDW, Last Energy will now commence with statutory planning activities in accordance with DNS Procedure Order. These planning activities will include a series of consultation events designed to gather input from communities located in proximity to the proposed Llynfi Clean Energy Project.

Members of the community interested in attending one of Last Energy’s 2025 consultations should follow the project’s event page for updates. Individuals may also subscribe to receive updates via the project contact form.

In October 2024, Last Energy announced a proposal to deploy four 20 MWe micro-nuclear power plants at the site of the former coal fired power station at Llynfi, Llangynwyd, Bridgend. The project aims to provide electricity to local industry and to the national electricity grid. Last Energy has committed to spending a minimum of 10% of the total £300 million project expenditure on locally sourced equipment, services, and other development-related activities. The project is expected to create at least 100 local full-time jobs over its 42 year life.
